Lifestyle changes are the foundation of blood pressure control, and in many cases, they can significantly reduce or even eliminate the need for medication.
Factors that can influence our blood pressure include:
- Diet
- Exercise
- Weight management
- Sleep
- Stress Management
In this podcast we will discuss the impact of diet on blood pressure
The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet is one of the most studied diets and is considered to be one of the most effective eating plans for managing blood pressure. The Mediterranean diet is also a very good option. Both of these options are sustainable, and it helps to think of them as a healthy lifestyle change as opposed to a diet, which has an end date.
We should aim to include the following foods in our diets: vegetables, whole grains, legumes, dairy products, lean proteins, fruits, and healthy fats.
Foods to avoid include processed meats, saturated fats, sugar and sugary drinks, foods that are high in sodium (canned soups, fast foods, salty snacks, chips, crackers).
Limit caffeine intake. Some people are more sensitive to the effect of caffeine than others. Caffeine intake can cause spikes in blood pressure and can increase risk of heart disease depending on whether you are a fast or slow metaboliser of caffeine.
Next week we will discuss exercise, weight management, sleep and stress management and its impact on blood pressure.
