Deep breathing, which is also referred to as diaphragmatic breathing or abdominal breathing, is not only beneficial for out physical health but also for our mental and emotional wellbeing.

Many of us don’t give attention to our breathing and we breathe more shallowly than we should be. When we don’t breathe deeply enough, several physiological and psychological effects can occur which include:

  • Lower levels of oxygen in our blood which has a negative impact on cellular function and energy.
  • Increased levels of carbon dioxide which disrupts our body’s pH balance and can cause confusion, drowsiness, and shortness of breath.
  • Increased level of stress and anxiety as well as muscle tension
  • Reduced lung capacity and function
  • Fatigue
  • Reduced cognitive function – concentration, productivity, mental performance.

There are several types of deep breathing exercises. The below infographic gives one example of a diaphragmatic  breathing exercise.

In our next podcast we will look at all the benefits of deep breathing.
