This is the last podcast in the series of sustainable foundations of health to ensure that the plans and intentions we have for the year are achievable and sustainable.
Over the past few weeks we have discussed prioritising real food, managing blood sugar, choosing gentle and consistent movement, prioritising healthy sleep, increasing water intake, and managing stress. This week we emphasise the need to be realistic with the goals we set and also the importance of taking the responsibility to go for the necessary check ups and to be kind to ourselves.
Realistic goal setting
It is vital that we be realistic when setting goals for our health and wellbeing. We all have blind spots and sometimes we can set goals that are not realistic – either in time frame or intensity – so it is always a good idea to run your ideas past someone you can trust to give you honest feedback before setting out to do something that is unrealistic or not achievable. Once you have decided what you want to do, break it down into achievable goals and then pick one or two things to master each month. Add something new as soon as you feel like you have more capacity and the habits you’ve already implemented have become more consistent.
Schedule the necessary check ups
When last did you have routine blood tests, check your blood pressure, your nutrient levels, or your weight and waist measurements? If it’s been a while, schedule appointments to see the necessary healthcare providers.
Be kind to yourself
Guilt erases progress whereas self-compassion builds it. Celebrate every positive health choice and get back on track if you slip back into old habits. Remember it takes at least 3 months to create a new habit so be patient with yourself. As you keep going, it will get easier.
