Supplements for headaches – Part 2

SHARE POST:

Last week we spoke about the supplements magnesium, Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), Feverfew, Butterbur and Omega 3 fatty acids for the possible prevention and treatment of headaches. This week we will discuss some other useful nutrients and supplements that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These include:

Vitamin D

A Vitamin D deficiency can be linked to chronic headaches. You can check your levels with a blood test to see if you are deficient. If you are in need of Vit D you can dose anywhere between 1000–4000 IU daily. Your healthcare provider may even put you on much higher levels depending on your blood results

Melatonin

Melatonin can help with sleep-related headaches and migraines. A dose of 3–10 mg before bed can be taken but check with your healthcare provider before taking melatonin in case there are interactions with any of your other medications.

Ginger and curcumin

Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and can be as effective as some pharmaceutical drugs for migraine relief. Curcumin is an extract of turmeric. It is an antioxidant which has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.

Alpha-lipoic acid

Alpha-lipoic acid is another antioxidant. It improves insulin sensitivity which can help prevent migraines.

If you do suffer from headaches and want to use supplements remember to pair them with good hydration, stress management, and a healthy diet for better results. Also remember that it may take several weeks to notice improvements and it is always advisable to consult a healthcare provider before starting any new supplements, especially if you are taking other medications.
