Types and causes of Headaches

SHARE POST:

Headaches are a common issue with many possible causes, from tension and dehydration to underlying medical conditions.

There are several types of headaches and these include:

  • Tension headache – Feels like a tight band around the head. Often caused by stress, poor posture, or eye strain.
  • Migraine – Intense throbbing pain, usually on one side. Often accompanied by nausea, light/sound sensitivity, and visual disturbances.
  • Cluster headache – Severe pain around one eye, often occurring in cycles. Can cause tearing and nasal congestion.
  • Sinus headache – Deep, aching pain in the forehead, cheeks, or nose, often linked to sinus infections.
  • Caffeine or withdrawal headache – Due to overuse or sudden withdrawal of caffeine, drugs or medications.
  • Exertion headache – Triggered by intense physical activity

There can be many reasons why we get headaches and these include:

  • Dehydration – Not drinking enough water can lead to headaches.
  • Eye strain – Staring at screens too long, poor lighting, or needing glasses.
  • Dietary triggers – Processed foods, MSG, alcohol, and artificial sweeteners can trigger headaches.
  • Sleep issues – Too much or too little sleep.
  • Stress and anxiety – Increases muscle tension and triggers headaches.
  • Hormonal changes – Menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause can contribute to headaches.
  • Weather changes – Barometric pressure shifts can trigger migraines.

Some lifestyle adjustments can be helpful in preventing and treating headaches, namely:

  • Drink plenty of water to make sure you stay well hydrated.
  • Maintain a consistent sleep schedule. Getting enough sleep and rest can help to prevent some headaches.
  • Check your posture and the ergonomics of your working and recreational areas. Adjust screen height, sit properly, and take breaks.
  • Avoid processed foods, excessive caffeine, and alcohol.
  • Practice stress management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and moderate exercise.
  • Try using warm or cold compresses. Cold packs help with migraines, while warm compresses can relieve tension headaches.
