Our skin is our body’s largest organ and plays a vital role in protection, regulation, and overall wellbeing. Our skin has several important functions, including barrier protection, hydration and nutrition.
As a barrier, our skin forms a shield against pathogens, toxins, UV radiation, and dehydration. Our skin also hosts beneficial bacteria, fungi, and other microbes which help to prevents infection, regulate our immunity, and reduce inflammation. The overuse of antibacterials, harsh skincare, and poor diet can disrupt this balance and weaken the barrier.
To help maintain the elasticity and function of our skin, we need to consume enough water, but we also need some key ingredients to keep our skin healthy. These include:
-
- Vitamin C (collagen production, antioxidant)
- Vitamin E (protects from free radical damage)
- Vitamin A/retinoids (cell turnover, repair)
- Zinc & selenium (healing, antioxidant defense)
- Essential fatty acids (omega-3s help reduce inflammation and dryness)
Next week we will discuss some lifestyle factors that we can put into place to protect and improve the health of our skin.
