Why Vitamin D is so Important –
especially for Thyroid Health
Even in sunny South Africa, more and more people are deficient in Vitamin D. This is due to the fact that people wear sunscreen to prevent sun damage from harmful UV rays and also because we spend more time indoors, working or playing on computers.
Vitamin D is vital for the regulation and absorption of calcium and phosphorus and plays and important role in immune function. Vit D is also essential to prevent bone disease.
Testing for and supplementing with Vitamin D is being increasingly recommended for people with thyroid and auto immune diseases, as well as obesity.
Research shows that the ability of the thyroid to work is dependent on the presence of vitamin D. This makes Vitamin D essential, not just a benefit. Thyroid treatment may also not be effective if vitamin D levels are not optimal.
If you have a thyroid or autoimmune disease and your levels of Vitamin D have not already been checked, I urge you to ask your doctor to do a blood test. Vitamin D is inexpensive and easy to supplement should you need it.
